The Italian Campaign Debate | WW2 Hot Takes

World War 2 LIVE · John C. McManus, Edward G. Hymel · 1h5m
professor of US military history, Missouri S&T; author of multiple volumes on the US Army in WWII
World War IIStrategy & Grand Strategy
Essential · Edition 2026-08-07

McManus and Hymel take opposite sides of the perennial question — was the Italian Campaign a strategic necessity or a costly sideshow? This is the format at its best: two historians who've spent multiple episodes on the campaign now forced to argue the big strategic question head-on. Hymel makes the case for Italy as essential to tying down German divisions and providing air bases; McManus (presumably) pushes back on the cost-benefit calculus of a campaign that consumed enormous Allied resources for grinding attritional gains up a mountainous peninsula. The debate format keeps both sides honest and specific rather than retreating to generalities.
